People with autism are reported to have poor communication skills.
This means they may
take longer to learn to speak
ever learn to speak
find it hard to begin or carry on a conversation
repeat words or phrases
may use odd language
not be able to play pretend games
ot be able to play with other children
However some people with autism claim that, rather than having poor communication skills, they have different communication skills and that people without autism need to learn how to communicate using those skills.
There is some evidence to show that interventions, such as Speech and Language Therapy, may help with communication problems.
Please see the Advanced version of this page for more information about this issue, including relevant research studies and interventions which may help.
