Claims

This page provides details of some of the claims that have been made for this intervention. The fact that something is claimed does not, of course, mean that it is necessarily true.

Some researchers claim that antidepressants can bring about significant improvements in the symptoms of depression and anxiety in people with autism.

Some researchers also claim that anti-depressants can be used to alleviate other problems faced by people with autism, including

  • anger, irritability and aggression
  • self-injurious behaviour
  • inattention and hyperactivity

Some researchers also claim that anti-depressants may improve some of the symptomatic problems of autism, such as

  • repetitive thoughts, actions and interests
  • social deficits, including language and communication skills deficits
