History

The effects of antidepressants were first discovered fortuitously (and through careful observation). It was also noticed that certain drugs caused severe depression in otherwise mentally well adults. Modern antidepressants such as the SSRI group were developed by the pharmaceutical industry and have since been used to treat a range of people, including some individuals with autism.
