Introduction
Clozapine is in a class of medications called atypical antipsychotics. It is sold under various brand names including Clozaril®, Denzapine®, FazaClo®, and Zaponex®.
It is used to treat the symptoms of schizophrenia in patients who have not been helped by other medications or who have tried to kill themselves and are likely to try to kill or harm themselves again.
Clozapine can produce some significant and harmful side effects and should only be used under medical supervision.
Some researchers believe it may be useful in the treatment of autism.
Opinion
We are currently reviewing the research evidence on the use of clozapine for people with autism.
