Claims
This page provides details of some of the claims that have been made for this intervention. The fact that something is claimed does not, of course, mean that it is necessarily true.
There have also been numerous claims made for the use of dimethylglycine supplements as an intervention for people with autism. For example
- Xia (2011) reported on a single case study of a child with pervasive developmental disorders (not otherwise specified) taking nutritional supplements of dimethylglycine and vitamin B6 and magnesium. ‘YH’s mother has also noticed tremendous improvements in him. His major responses to the treatment included his increased ability in communicating with others, more verbal, and more eye contacts. These improvements were observed both at home and at school, and occurred after the B6-Mg and before the DMG supplement. Within a few weeks after he started DMG, he exhibited marked improvements in following directions. His mother and grandparents also noticed that he fell asleep much faster than he previously did. He became calm and rarely threw tantrums since then. Before the treatment, he easily and frequently lost his temper, often in an unpredictable way. He was also more attentive and less hyperactive following the treatment. Thus, he could easily sit through for longer periods of time while working on his homework. Furthermore, he became much more flexible with respect to his daily routine as well as in many other areas of life. As a result of these positive responses, his mother has experienced a dramatic improvement in the quality of their lives.’
- Rimland (1990) reported ‘In some cases dramatic results have been seen within 24 hours: A Los Angeles mother was driving on the freeway, three-year-old Kathy in the back seat, five-year-old mute autistic son Sammy in the front. DMG had been started the day before. Kathy began to cry. Sammy turned and spoke his first words: “Don’t cry, Kathy.” The mother, stunned, almost crashed the car.’
- Rimland (2008?) claims that ‘Many parents have reported that, within a few days of starting DMG, the child’s behavior improved noticeably, better eye contact was seen, frustration tolerance increased, the child’s speech improved, or more interest and ability in speaking was observed.’
- Rimland also claims (2001) that ‘Over the past 40 years I have encountered a great many cases of severely SIB/A [self-injurious and assaultive behavior] individuals who have responded wonderfully well to nutritional supplementation, particularly high dose B6 and magnesium, and DMG.’
