Families forever changed by addition of autism service dogs

There are many pieces to the puzzle which defines autism. From behaviors to sensory issues, or finding exactly how to express themselves, those who are familiar with the condition often struggle in ways most people wouldn’t begin to understand.

For some, a piece of that puzzle can be found in service animals. Service animals -- more specifically, therapy dogs -- have proved for years to alleviate the frustrations and struggles associated with conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder, autism, cardiac issues and seizure disorders.

Two years ago, two Moon Area High School seniors decided to complete capstone projects that significantly changed the lives of two children living with autism. Working with Perfect Fit Canines, Megan Musante and Annie McCoy began the process of training and preparing the four-legged companions to become autism service dogs.
