Autism: Families expose serious failings within inpatient care

Urgent improvements must be made to NHS England’s “Transforming Care” programme after families of people with autism reveal serious failings within inpatient settings, a major report has concluded.

The National Autistic Society (NAS) found that the biggest challenge facing patients was the lack of appropriate services available in the local community.

Thirteen families interviewed for the report said their relative’s wellbeing deteriorated while in care and their needs were not met. The “Transforming Care: our stories” report outlines serious failings of care including incorrectly administrating heavy doses of anti-psychotics when no psychosis was present, unnecessary use of restraint and staff not being trained in autism.
