Research Autism’s Comment on the Department of Health’s Announcement Regarding Working Towards a National Strategy for Autism

News Release Date: 8th May 2008

Research Autism is delighted that the Government has listened to our recommendation to undertake a study of the prevalence and needs of adults with autism in the UK to inform a National Strategy for Autism. This is an important first step towards understanding the scale of autism in the UK and will help to decide what next steps need to be taken as part of the Strategy to ensure people with the condition are supported and signposted toward approaches that will enhance their quality of life.

It is essential that the Government recognises the significant investment that is required to ensure that this complex issue, which affects all sections of society, is thoroughly audited and understood with a view to making a significant contribution to those affected by autism. We are looking forward to working with the Department of Health to ensure the Strategy achieves this outcome, as enhancing the lives of people with autism is an absolute priority for Research Autism.

Geoffrey Maddrell, Chairman, Research Autism
