This event was the first in the series of Research Autism-Lorna Wing conferences and seminars and examined the timely issue of autistic spectrum conditions (ASC) in women and girls.
We were delighted to bring together some of the foremost experts in the world to explore this topic. Following Professor Gillberg’s findings regarding possible “under diagnosis”, this issue has attracted great interest from clinicians, academics, the third sector, the national press and from women with ASC.

Date and time: Thursday 16th July – from 11.30 am to 4.30 pm

The aims of the conference were to explore why the outcomes are so poor for adults with autism in the UK and to identify appropriate solutions to this problem.
The conference took place following the release of The National Audit Office (NAO) report which was commissioned to explore the problems and challenges of supporting adults with autism. The aim of that report was to assess current service provision in areas including: health, social care, education, benefits and employment support. It identified how these areas could be made more effective, efficient and appropriate to the needs of adults with autism and their carers.

As part of an ongoing programme of research topics that are of interest to individuals with autism and their families and professionals, Research Autism held its Collaborative Autism Research Forum on ‘Medical Issues in Autism’
Held at the Keyworth Centre, London South Bank University, Keyworth Street, London SE1 0AA
Wednesday 11 July from 9-30 am – 4-30 pm

Key Note presentation by Professor Digby Tantam, University of Sheffield.
The 2005 study of the membership of the National Autistic Society by Richard Mills and Lorna Wing highlighted the importance of informed psychiatric support for individuals with autistic spectrum disorders and the high prevalence of anxiety related problems.
This latest forum brought together individuals on the spectrum, families, researchers and professionals to explore topics of concern in order to scope and commission future research in this area. Our invited speakers represented the various perspectives of mental health issues in autism.
Our second collaborative autism research forum, on the topic of ‘Successful futures for adults with autism’, was held on 28th November 2006 at the London South Bank University, chaired by Professor Patricia Howlin and Professor Chris Cullen.
Topics that emerged prominently as priorities for research when groups re-gathered for the plenary session included: cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT); support at the transitional stage from school to adulthood; ways of building awareness of autism; and possibility of identification of early symptoms as indicators of later acute problems with a view to remediation. Many other issues, including diagnosis in adults and the long term costs of not providing effective interventions also featured prominently.
The forum took place on at the London South Bank University and was chaired by Professor Patricia Howlin and Professor Chris Cullen.
Speakers included: Ms. Jacqui Jackson, Dr. Luci Wiggs and Dr. Jeremy Turk
